jane maxwell
Jane Maxwell is a mixed media and collage artist. She incorporates pattern in with her work and her work is quite symmetrical. I like her work because she uses bright colours either for the foreground or background and then uses black on the image she wants the viewer to focus on as it stands out. I like the way some of her work includes interesting abstract shapes, bright colours and an interesting pattern.

During this project I have been inspired by the artwork of Jane maxwell. I feel like she is quite an expressive artist and her use of bright colours and pattern suggests this. Her work has an up beat tone to it and grabs the viewer's attention. The narrative behind her work is joyful, positive and makes me personally think of positive emotions despite the fact the black stands out. Black ain't always a negative tone and the use of colour with it suggests she doesn't want the viewer to think the image has a negative meaning. Her work has a huge sense of accuracy due to the fact it has even measurements, its symmetrical, has patterns that are equal in size. Her work is very consistent, distinct and it's obvious a lot thought has been put in to how it is going to be shown, which is it has strong composition. The majority of her work consists of patterns that involve the shape of women which could suggest she wants a very feminine tone to her work and that her work is about the nature of women.
This image is based on the decade 1980 when the Berlin Wall fell and the people of Berlin were no longer divided. This image is based on the celebrations that took place when this event occurred and the people from the eastern and western regions of Berlin were reunited. I created this image in the style of Jane Maxwell, I chose to use pattern with shapes in the background, bright colours to put emphasis on the joy the people were experiencing but also grey from the newspapers to illustrate the negative emotions they were feeling before the wall fell. I chose to use newspaper so that the cuttings matched coloured and appeared more symmetrical and similar to each other. After including Jane Maxwell in my project I feel like her work has helped me to appreciate pattern more and create a piece of art with a message behind it rather than just random mark making with pattern, that doesn't focus on something in particular.
These images and shapes consist of magazine cuttings, shreddings and cuttings from printed images. This is in the style of Jane Maxwell and Hannah Hoch. I chose to use a fabric background with shapes similar, colours and pattern to replicate the style of Jane Maxwell but also chose to have abstract cuttings to create images in the style of Hannah Hoch. This image is a response to the decade 1970 when Margaret Thatcher won the election and emphasises the point of fairness for woman because at the time men had control over women and had the power to do things that women couldn't, however Margaret Thatcher's election symbolised hope for women in their quest to become equal.
