robert mars
Robert Mars is a graphic designer, illustrator and mixed media artist. I like the way he uses composition, by using three layers to place his objects (the background, midground and foreground.) I like the way he thinks about composition and places images in certain areas so the viewer isn't just drawn to one area of the image. I also like the birght blocks of colour he uses and the bold images. In addition to that I like the fact he has a few black and white images with the bright black ground to make the whole image visually interesting.

Robert Mars creates collage art that appears to be expressive due to the bright colours, big pictures and detail the images have. His work is quite consistent as most of it has the same layout, a good use of composition, bright backgrounds with blocks of colours, small use of text and a narrative. I like the fact that eventhough he uses a couple of collages for the background he chooses to use different tones in that same colour rather than the one colour and he has brighter and darker tones of that colour next to each other so you can see where the block starts and finishes. The background divides the image into different sections, the bit where it does that is the area where the darker and lighter tone of a colour are next to each other because it creates a thin line that divides the image. I feel like he does it so that the viewers eyes are drawn across the image gradually rather than looking at it straight away and maybe missing something. When I look at his work I feel like the main theme is enjoying life. I think this because most of them have bright positive colours, a car to suggest a journey or living your life at a certain pace, and then a hotels and motels to rest at and not worry about anything. The image on this page shows a cola drink and has the words 'pause, drink' the pause could be putting issues, negative thoughts on hold. After working in the style of Robert Mars I feel like his work has helped me improve on my composition and placing things in the right areas, making the image stronger, sometimes without even realising. It has also helped me consider the use of colour in terms of what to make colour to make the digital image and background so that the image looks visually stronger.
This is an experiment based on Nelson Mandela's release from prison. Despite the fact he was well known for being a hero some people saw him as a terrorist due to the the violence in protests, which is why I have a figure holding a gun to represent that. I printed this on to a painted background. I used a yellow paint for the background so that the black and brown images stood out and chose to place them in the middle to make good composition.
I cut out blocks of coloured paper for the background to represent the style of Robert Mars. I chose to use bright colours because the election of Margaret Thatcher was a positive thing and suggested that Britain was over coming sexism. In addition to this Robert Mars works with colourful backgrounds. I printed an image of Margaret Thatcher and printed it out in black and white for two reasons, one because it makes the image stand out and she's the first thing you notice when you look at it and also because no-one new whether her election would have a positive or negative affect on Britain.
